Living, once-living and products                            of living things

We come across living and non-living things daily in our life. Sometimes it is easy to tell the difference between living and non-living things, and sometimes it can be difficult. But it doesn't stop there! Did you know that we can also classify things as 'once-living' and 'products of living things'? Whoa! Let's find out what these are all about.

Things that were once part of a living thing, such as wood, fruit, leaves, fossils and cut grass, are usually called once-living. This also includes anything dead.

Products of living things include milk, wool, paper, cheese, honey, flour, leather, or any product that is made from a living thing.

                            Concept Columns

Look at the Concept Columns page and discuss why you think the images are grouped as they are. What do the images in each column have in common? Write what you think the reason is for the groupings on your web whiteboard. Share your idea with the rest of the class and then draw or write one more item that belongs in each column on the page.

                        A MISSION ON EARTH

Imagine you have just arrived on Earth. Your mission is to conduct an investigation by exploring stations set up around the classroom.

Your job is to classify the items as 'living', 'once-living', 'product of a living thing' or 'non-living'. Use the Classifying Items sheet to record your observations.
